Coordination of GNS

The Division appointed six (6) academic staff as Coordinators to manage the general affairs of the specific GNS Courses assigned to them and report the situation to the Director of GNS from time to time. Likewise, one Examination Officer who also doubles as the ICT Officer is appointed to monitor all the GNS courses and examination for the regular and sandwich students.  Regular meetings are held with the Coordinators as well as with the Exam Coordinator to ensure improvement in the service delivery.

Online Lecture Delivery

The GNS Division faced various challenges on the delivery of its six courses through the face-face method. To this end, the mode of delivering all GNS courses has changed from physical to online, which is being effectively facilitated by the course contents that have been uploaded on the Learning Management System Module Platform. The course contents for the Learning Management System (LMS) Module Platform through which we started delivering our GNS courses away from the physical classroom delivery have yielded positive results.

The development of the course contents was a laudable project undertaken by the immediate past Director as a visionary initiative to resolve the challenges of delivering lectures to large population of students in insufficient class rooms. It was also intended to ease monitoring of students’ attendance. The platform could accommodate at once our peculiar large classes ranging between 11,000 and 14,000 students without any additional platform charges to the University.

The lecture materials that were made available to students include: Courseware material, its PowerPoint and Video recording of the lecture delivery. These are available online for a week for students to visit at their convenient time. This was achieved before the University management opted for online delivery as a result of the emergence of COVID-19 global pandemic.

Examination

Examination of courses in General Studies consists of two main components namely; Continuous Assessment and End of Semester Examinations. All examinations are conducted using Computer Based Testing (CBT) platform.  It is, however, imperative to stress that the facilities at the CBT Centre are becoming generally inadequate to meet the challenges of the number of students and the examinations undertaken by the Centre.

Prospects

The General Studies Division engages dynamically in the following activities:

1. Monitoring of all the GNS electronic learning mechanism for efficient service delivery.
2. Liaising with the University’s Network Operations Centre (NOC) to ensure that the Servers housing all GNS Courses are active and connected to power 24/7.
3. Training and Retraining of Course Coordinators, GNS Examination/IT Officer as well as GNS part-time lecturers on the improvement of lecture materials compatible with the modules on the Learning Management System (LMS).
